Most weddings today use confetti – small pieces of tissue or metallic paper cut into wedding-appropriate designs such as hearts, bells or even little figures. It is showered over the happy couple as they emerge from the church or place of marriage as newlyweds and became more and more popular !
The tradition of throwing rice or confetti over newlyweds dates back to pre-Roman times. The custom, which also used to include other grains such as wheat, represents the hope of fertility and prosperity for the new couple. Some cultures believed that scattering rice would also ward off evil spirits, who would be too busy eating the discarded grains to bring harm to the bride and groom!
If you’re worried about the mess (some places don’t allow confetti now, so be sure to check with your venue) then you can always save the confetti for decorating your reception tables with. Another alternative is natural or petal confetti, made from fresh or freeze-dried flower petals, and is therefore biodegradable.
The actual ay the weddings are more well !
word, ‘confetti’ originates from the Italian sweets also known as ‘dragee’ which are thrown during carnivals. These little sugar coated almonds are often given out as favours at weddings (as you probably wouldn’t want them showering on your head!).
