In recent years, Xinjiang has experienced a wave of significant developments in the jade carving industry. Following the conclusion of the expo and the third China Hetian Jade Seminar, the region hosted a grand recognition ceremony for master artisans and an apprenticeship conference, marking a milestone in the development of local jade craftsmanship. The Hetian jade industrial chain is now taking shape, signaling a new era of growth for the jade carving sector in Xinjiang.
For decades, the people of Xinjiang have been actively exploring and innovating in jade carving, achieving remarkable success that has gained widespread recognition. "We've won numerous national awards, which shows that the industry is on the rise," said Guo Lanxiang, president of the Xinjiang Jewellery Association. However, he emphasized that the industry still needs continuous effort and government support to reach its full potential. As the birthplace of Chinese jade culture, Xinjiang has a responsibility to preserve and promote this heritage.
In August, experts and scholars from various fields—ranging from jade carving and appraisal to commerce and education—gathered in Xinjiang to discuss techniques, sculpting methods, and testing standards. This event also featured the first exhibition of works by top Xinjiang jade masters, showcasing nearly 100 representative pieces, highlighting the high level of expertise in the region.
Guo Lanxiang believes that the conference will not only promote the Hetian jade culture but also expand its market reach, bringing Xinjiang’s unique jade products to a broader audience. He advocates for the industrialization of Hetian jade, ensuring that it meets the needs of all consumers, from the general public to collectors. By creating innovative, culturally rich, and affordable products, the industry can grow sustainably.
According to data, by the end of 2009, there were nearly 3,000 jade processing and sales companies in Xinjiang, employing over 30,000 people, with a total annual output and sales of around 2.8 billion yuan. This reflects the growing scale and strength of the industry.
Xinjiang's jade carving style has earned a strong reputation in the industry. Since the early 2000s, the sector has developed rapidly, producing several renowned jade carvers such as Ma Jingui, Ma Xuewu, and others. Today, Xinjiang is not only a source of raw materials but also a major distribution center for jade products.
The government has supported the development of the industry through talent training programs. For example, the Xinjiang Vocational University established a specialized program in jade identification and processing, producing over 200 graduates who are now key players in the field.
Recently, a special ceremony was held to recognize and pass on the traditions of Xinjiang jade carving. Leaders from various associations presented certificates to master artisans, marking the official transfer of skills to the next generation. This event symbolizes the continuity and vitality of the craft.
