Xinjiang jade carving industry events continue, jade industry has entered a large development and prosperity

Xinjiang has recently experienced a wave of significant events in the jade industry. Following the conclusion of the expo and the third China Hetian Jade Seminar, the region held a grand recognition ceremony for master jade carvers and an apprenticeship conference, highlighting the growing importance of traditional craftsmanship. The development of Xinjiang’s Hetian jade industry is now taking shape, marking a new era of growth and innovation. For decades, jade carvers in Xinjiang have been actively exploring and refining their craft, achieving remarkable success. Their work has gained widespread recognition, with frequent awards in national competitions indicating a thriving industry. However, despite these achievements, the industry still faces challenges. As Guo Lanxiang, president of the Xinjiang Jewellery Association, noted, “The power of local jade artisans is limited, and continued efforts and government support are essential for sustained growth. With its deep cultural roots, Xinjiang has a responsibility to promote and develop the jade culture.” In August, experts, scholars, and masters from various fields—such as Hetian jade culture research, carving, commerce, appraisal, and education—gathered in Xinjiang to discuss techniques, sculpting methods, and appraisal standards. A special exhibition featuring works by 23 top jade sculpture masters was also held, showcasing nearly 100 representative pieces. This event marked one of the most significant displays of Xinjiang’s jade carving talent to date. Guo Lanxiang emphasized that the conference aims to promote the Hetian jade culture, enhance carving skills, and expand the market. He believes that with proper strategies, Xinjiang’s jade products can reach a national and even global audience. To achieve this, he advocates for industrialization, ensuring that jade products cater to different consumer segments through diverse designs, cultural meanings, and price ranges. According to recent data, Xinjiang had nearly 3,000 jade processing and sales companies at the end of 2009, employing over 30,000 people. The industry has grown significantly, with more than 100 processing companies and 2,600 artists contributing to an annual production and sales value of around 2.8 billion yuan. Over the past two decades, Xinjiang has produced several renowned jade carving masters, including Ma Jingui, Ma Xuewu, and Guo Haijun. These figures have helped transform Xinjiang from a raw material source into a key distribution center for jade products. The scale of the industry continues to expand, showing a strong upward trend. Since 2005, Xinjiang has been actively identifying and promoting talented jade carvers, with six Chinese jade carving masters currently recognized. Additionally, vocational training programs have emerged, such as the Baoyu Stone Identification and Processing College at Xinjiang Vocational University, which has trained over 200 professionals. Recently, a major event took place where jade carving masters gathered to celebrate the recognition of inheritors and the continuation of traditional techniques. This ceremony marked the official transfer of knowledge from one generation to the next, reinforcing the legacy of Xinjiang’s jade art. Once known as a region without a strong jade carving tradition, Xinjiang has now transformed into a vibrant hub. From small workshops to large-scale enterprises, the industry has evolved significantly. With increasing demand and market maturity, the future of Xinjiang’s jade carving industry looks promising. Industry experts predict that by 2010, China will become a leading global player in jewelry processing and consumption. Guo Lanxiang remains optimistic, believing that the concept of “prosperous possession of jade” will continue to resonate with consumers, ensuring long-term growth for the industry.
