weekend links: an update
Hello everyone,
I hope you're all doing well! First off, I want to thank you all for your warm messages and kind inquiries regarding my recent joint kidney donation and recipient surgeries with our dear friend. It's been a whirlwind, but I'm thrilled to say that both of us are healing beautifully.
I've returned to Madrid and am feeling almost back to my old self. Our friend is also recovering beautifully at home, though it took a bit longer for her to feel like herself after a couple of tough weeks. Her new kidney is functioning better than my remaining one, which is still working perfectly fine. She says she hasn't felt this good in years! The anti-rejection medications have been a bit of a challenge—she had an infection shortly after starting them, but thankfully, she's finally back home and improving rapidly. It's such a relief to see her on the mend. Honestly, it was a bit surreal being surgery neighbors with her, walking into the ORs mere minutes apart. Todd even snapped a picture of us in our matching surgical gowns, but we've agreed to keep that private.
Thank you all so much for your encouraging words during this time. It's truly heartwarming to feel the support from all of you. I can finally sit down to work again after a month of recovery, and I'm eager to dive back into my projects. I also wanted to express my gratitude for the reading recommendations some of you sent while I was recuperating. Once I felt up to it, I thoroughly enjoyed diving into those links. Now that I've had plenty of downtime, I've compiled a list of weekend reads for you too.
Let's start with something pretty from Pinterest. These embellishments are stunning! Each bead and sequin is triple-stitched, giving it that extra touch of elegance.

For a fun DIY project, check out this summer fairy light idea. Badminton birdies add a unique twist!

I've been itching to sew lately, and I'm excited to share my progress on this white linen Cinema Dress. The bodice is adorned with pintucks and entredeux. Hoping to find some time soon to finish it!

On the food front, we tried making these vegan fudge popsicles recently. They're absolutely delicious! To be honest, I indulged in one for breakfast this morning.

Speaking of indulgence, my sister and I had a fantastic short trip to Marrakech before heading to New York. We had so many unforgettable experiences and met incredible people. One highlight was visiting the Yves Saint Laurent museum in Jardin Majorelle, which celebrates Berber culture. The costumes are incredibly textured and detailed, especially the jewelry and head coverings. It's easy to see how St. Laurent drew inspiration from this rich heritage.

And speaking of head coverings, this Sikh turban is simply breathtaking. Though, I must admit, I worry about the weight on that poor man's neck!

Now, onto some weekend reading material:
- A delightful series of astronaut photos that capture the wonder of childhood.
- It was delightful to see my friends at McCall’s featured in the New York Times. They produce our Lisette for Butterick sewing patterns, so I often collaborate with their lovely team.
- At first, the concept of growing Alexander McQueen's skin for accessories seemed unsettling, but knowing his quirky humor, it feels fitting. Imagine lab-grown leather for shoes and bags—it’s exciting!
- This made me laugh: repurposed graffiti with a modern twist.
- There’s a sweet little profile of me in the latest Sew News magazine.
- I’m usually not big on celebrity style, but I adore how Queen Letizia mixes high and low in her wardrobe and repeats outfits creatively. It’s inspiring compared to always wearing designer labels. Other style icons include Michelle Obama and Kate Middleton. Speaking of style, it’s refreshing to hear that Britain’s new PM, Theresa May, embraces fashion openly.
- Hospitalized kids hunting for Waldo in the construction site outside their windows? How adorable!
- I mentioned seeing the Manus x Machina exhibit at the Met while in New York, and it was extraordinary. Here’s a great interview with the former Costume Institute head explaining its brilliance.

Alright, it’s time to get back to work on the Liesl + Co. fall collection. They’re already late, and I need to focus. But I’ll try to pop in soon. Enjoy the rest of your summer!
Oh, and as a thank-you for reading through this post, here’s a special offer. This weekend (August 5-7, 2016), Craftsy is offering 50% off their newest classes. Apparel sewing classes are included. Check out the details here (affiliate link).
Take care, and stay safe!
Warmly,
